THE OBJECT OF NAS
NAS’ object is promoted hearing care and audiological research and development in the Nordic countries through cooperation between the single professional organizations and the organizations for the hard-of-hearing. This may be accomplished through
- publication of an audiological, scientific journal and other publications,
- arranging congresses, meetings and courses for the members of the affiliated organizations.
NAS, founded in 1960, is a society with 30 member organizations in the five Nordic countries. The organizations are representing professionals and consumers (hard of hearing and deaf) with the total number of individual members of some 120 000.
NAS is organizing congresses in audiology every second years alternatively in the different Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). Every fourth year the congress is held in the Scandinavian languages (Danish, Norwegian and Swedish) with simultaneous translation to Finnish and also to text and sign language, when needed. Congresses may also be held as international congresses in English.
NAS congresses are also platforms, where the professionals and the consumers meet to discuss issues of interest and of importance for all and for the future developments in audiology. The Nordic countries have very similar health care systems, based on legislation, whereby the state or community takes the economic responsibility for expenses of screening, diagnostics, habilitation and rehabilitation.
In addition to organizing congresses NAS owns the International Journal of Audiology (IJA) together wit the International Society of Audiology (ISA) and the British Society of Audiology (BSA).
